This diorama is an interpretation of the Batcave from Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman. All the iconic elements of this cinematic legend are reproduced here.

The diorama consists of an imposing, raised metal platform, surrounded by guardrails, and integrated into a rocky setting evoking the raw, dark and oozing texture of the cavern in Tim Burton’s film. At the center of the composition, a Bruce Wayne figurine sits facing screens whose arrangement in a retro-futuristic aesthetic faithful to the imagery of the film, displaying faces of the Joker played by Jack Nicholson.

On the right, an Alfred Pennyworth figurine holds open a door, revealing the Batman costume worn by Bruce Wayne in the film. In the foreground, a scale model of the film’s Batmobile is placed on a massive, overhanging circular platform, reminiscent of the film’s set design, in which the Batmobile sits like a sacred relic at the center of a sanctuary.

Only one element of this diorama is not a direct reference to Tim Burton’s film, even if its aesthetic is very much in keeping with the spirit of the Batmobile, the BatBoat placed under the metal platform.

The creation of this diorama demonstrates a remarkable work of aesthetic interpretation of the visual universe of Tim Burton’s Batcave. This diorama manages to condense, on a miniature scale, the gothic, technological and melancholic essence of the emblematic place. The choice of positioning Bruce Wayne in front of the BatComputer and Alfred near the door accentuates the narrative dimension of the diorama. Beyond the reference to a scene from the film, this spatial composition translates the feeling of solitude and the desire for control of the character of Bruce Wayne played by Michael Keaton, and the benevolent and domestic presence of the character of Alfred Pennyworth, played by Michael Gough.

The choices of scenography for this diorama therefore reflect a reflection on the symbolism explored by the film, that of the Batcave, not as a simple functional space, but as an interior theatre, a material extension of Bruce Wayne’s psyche.

This 1/18 scale diorama is a very complete representation of a hand-crafted Batcave, inspired mainly by the gothic atmosphere of the Batcave from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film.

Among the evocative elements of this atmosphere, we find the dark rock in the background of the setting, which under the effect of the light seems to ooze, like the rock in the cave in 1989. We also find in the foreground, on the right, a platform with an admittedly original design, but on which is placed a scale model of the Batmobile from the film, accentuating the reference. The artist does not provide information regarding the scale model used. However, the reflections of the metallic paint suggest a diecast model, maybe from the Hot Wheels©️.The scenography of the access ramp and the mechanical doors behind the Batmobile suggest a mechanical exit to the surface as in Tim Burton’s film.

Other elements seem to draw their inspiration from other visual references interwoven with the Batcave Myth. The floor of the platform is notably painted in shades of steel gray, enhanced with yellow markings that give a more industrial tone to the diorama. On the left, a computer console very different from Tim Burton’s and its confusing layout, installed on a metallic-looking platform, in a modular and structured style, seems closer to that of Zack Snyder’s 2016 film Batman vs Superman. As for the Joker’s faces visible on these screens, while they are clearly a reference to a scene from Tim Burton’s film, they do not represent the one played by Jack Nicholson, but that of the Arkham saga video games. Another reference, that of the architecture of the vaults integrated into the rock in the background of the diorama, seems to echo those of Christopher Nolan’s 2005 film Batman Begins. Another reference, that of the architecture of the vaults integrated into the rock in the background of the diorama, seems to echo those of the film Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan from 2005. We can also see secondary platforms whose more industrial and technological style seems inspired by the sets of video games. Finally, the Batman figurine, placed on the left of the diorama, on a platform reproducing red tiles, represents the character of Batman in the animated series Batman from 1992. Like the Batmobile, no information is given concerning this figurine.

Although this diorama appears to lack integrated lighting, the subdued ambient lighting used to present this video highlights the contrasts between the dark rock, the metallic surfaces and the reflections of the Batmobile for an overall result that is both realistic and stylized.

Overview

This diorama was created for the 1/6 scale Batman figure, a special metal edition, signed by Jim Lee. The diorama dimensions are impressive due to the 1/6 scale. For this reason, the designer didn’t want to make the complete Batcave.

The design of this diorama is made with a vertical panel in the background, placed on a horizontal panel. An other flat panel is the roof. All the wall in the background is covered with gray rocks. Because of the strong backlite and the ambient light it’s difficult to really appreciate the work on the rocks.

This diorama features two staging elements, distributed on each side of the diorama.

At the left, in the larger part of the diorama, we have a backlit multi screen Bat-computer. Even if the display of the screens are only pictures, the backlit effect is pretty cool due to light-transmitting frame of the screens. In this video, the designer’s comments do not specify how the batcomputer was made. In the front of the batcomputer there is a rotating armchair placed on the rocky foreground platform.

At the right side of the diorama we have a waterfall which could be the entrance of the Batcave. The designer specify that it’s make in resin. The result effects is very nice. It’s very plaisant to see this kind of staging item in a batcave diorama. it’s not easy to do. Certainly for dimensions reasons of the diorama, the designer didn’t make a 1/6 scale waterfall.

Technical details

This video does not include a making of sequence, only some introductory comments from the creator. However, the designer indicates that additional information is available on her Facebook account.

This diorama does not include any animation system. The lighting  is fixed.

Overview

This 1/50 scale diorama depicts the Batcave from the 1960s TV series. So, this diorama takes up the general presentation of the Batcave in this series. In the background the huge energy generator in front of which all the equipments are distributed on the same surface, with in the center, the Batmobile.

Action figures

This diorama does not feature any action figures.

Technical details

This diorama is very bright. LEDs of different colors, implanted in the ground, illuminate elements.

In this diorama, no element is mobile.

Conclusion

This diorama is not on the scale of the diorama of the BATLab112 project, but it is very interesting because of its degree of likeness to the Batcave from the 60s series. Using an existing and popular Batcave model seems like a good idea to make the diorama easier to understand for people who are not familiar with the Batman universe.

Scénographie / Scenography

This diorama features a 1/32 scale Batmobile and a Batman figure from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The Gothic style architecture of the Batcave seems inspired by Tim Burton’s movies with a dark rough and rocky cave on several levels. The Batcave design is simple. It is composed of only one open cavity on the front face. All the walls cave are covered with rocks. The rocks appearance is quite uniform but realistic and well detailed with a brush effect.

This diorama features three staging elements, distributed at different heights in the diorama for better visibility. In the back we can see the door to the Batcave access and the stairs to a rocky platform with the Batcomputer. In the front, there is the rocky platform to park the Batmobile. A fixed footbridge connects the platform to the ground floor of the Batcave. The arrangement of these three elements draws a path from the door to the Batmobile.

Technical details

The making of shows a picture frame used as a rigid base. All the Batcave walls are made with polystyrene plates cut, glued and then coated and painted. A garland of blue LEDs is used to illuminate the diorama and simulate the lighting of the Batcave.

This diorama does not include any animation system. The lighting of the blue leds is fixed.
